Getting to School Safely
Parents, share these safety tips with your children.
Ø Do not cross the street alone if you are younger
than age 10. Walk with others when possible.
Ø Never play in the road.
Ø Always try to walk on paths or sidewalks. If there
are no sidewalks or paths, walk facing road traffic.
Ø Look both ways for danger before, and while,
crossing the street.
Ø Walk, do not run.
Ø Dress in bright colors or wear reflective materials
so drivers can easily see you.
Riding the Bus
Ø Always remain 10 steps away from the bus as it
approaches and leaves the bus stop, to be out of
the "Danger Zone". Make sure the bus driver can
Ø Always cross the street in front of the bus. Never
cross behind the bus.
Ø Walk to the bus stop and stay on the sidewalk.
Ø Arrive at the bus stop about five minutes before
the bus is scheduled to arrive.
Ø While at the bus stop, wait in a safe place away
from the road. Do not run and play while waiting.
Ø Never speak to strangers at the bus stop, and
never get into a car with a stranger. Always go
straight home after school and check in. Tell your
parents if a stranger tries to talk to you.
Ø When the bus arrives, watch for red flashing lights
& the stop sign to be extended before crossing the
street. Cross only when all traffic has stopped.
Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
Ø Every person needs his or her own seat belt. Do not
let passengers ride in storage areas or on other
people's laps. Always buckle up!
Ø Children should always ride in a back seat,
restrained in a car seat or safety belt.
Ø Infants should ride in rear-facing car seats until
they weigh 20 lbs & are at least 1 year old.
Ø Children over 1 year old & weighing between 20
& 40 lbs should ride in forward-facing car seats.
Ø Children over forty pounds should use booster
seats restrained with a lap & shoulder belt until
they are 4'9" tall. A regular safety belt won't
fully protect a child this size in a crash.
Ø All children & adults weighing over 80 lbs should
use an adult safety belt. It’s the law.
